Does anyone know to what tension the belt should be set to on the Avanti Blade 8C?
I have emailed Avanti local and in NZ but have no answer as yet. The Gates Carbon Drive website advises that tensions should be as per the manufacturers recommendations for the model.
I've just moved to Launceston and will be commencing my studies at the Uni (Newnham). I am keen on cycling to the Uni but am very unsure about how to make my way there as I am really new to the whole cycling-on-roads issue. Would be glad if I could get someone to show me how? Probably cycle a couple of times with me to and back if it is not too much to ask.

Last month, Jodie Campbell announced nearly $600,000 of the Federal Government's National Bike Path Project Fund would be going towards improving cycling conditions and infrastructure in and around Launceston. This combined with other funding sources will see the rollout of 50km bike routes across the city and its suburbs.

As a part of T-Bug's ongoing role in the Launceston City Council's Bike Committee, we will be gathering community feedback on these planned developments, starting with the the draft proposal for the development of the Northern Suburbs Commuter Cycle Trail which T-Bug members recently provided comment on.
Over the coming months, planning for other parts of the Arterial Bike Route Network will continue. Watch this space for more details.

Poll: Are edge markings a suitable alternative to bike lanes where limited space is available?

With cycling infrastructure development on the rise, it is becoming obvious that some roads just don't have room for regulation width bike lanes. In these situations, wide edge markings and road shoulders are often painted in as "unofficial" bike areas.

There are a good number of pros and cons with edge markings, and we are very interested to see what points the cycling community thinks are most important.

Please vote and feel free to discuss why you like or dislike the idea of edge markings being used in place of bike lanes on narrow roads.

Hi,
I am a 70 yo male cyclist living in Albury NSW .
I have been Racing and Touring in England and Austalia for the past 55 yrs, I think it is in my blood. I still ride three times a week with a few of my over 60s friends.

I have just found your site and your forum through a contact from your President Malcolm.

I used to belong to a Cycling Club in Birmingham UK ,the SARACEN RCC we had about 60 members aged between 15 - 75 years.
We went on Clubruns every Sunday starting at 9 am with coffee break at about 11am then lunch at 12.30 then afternoon tea at 3pm then home by 5pm.
We did short rides of 50 miles and in the Summer longer rides 80-90 miles.

There is a special Bond that occurs between cyclists which I really enjoy.

If you need any info re Albury and surrounds please contact me per email ian.baillie1@bigpond.com.au

Bike Cages - Paterson Street Carparks (4 replies)

Please note the Launceston Council is installing bike cages in the Paterson Street East and West Carparks. If you commute into the CBD and need a secure, dry place to store your bike (well who doesn't), check out Paterson Street car/bike parks. As of start of July there are 6 near the toll booth Paterson West, and another 6 to be installed soon just to the left of the entrance at Paterson East.

Check them out. Better still use them. The general location won't change, but if need be we can input into the orientation.

Good on the council for the initiative, I'm sure they'd be pleased with some good feedback - via this forum for starters.

And great to see carparks starting to be shared with bikes...wouldn't it be nice if this is the start of demand which will see say 100 cages, 10 years from now!

Bike Rally in Support of Bike Funding - Fri 19 Jun 12:30pm - Civic Square (no replies)

TBUG has a marvellous opportunity to flex our newborn muscles and enthusiasm, and help get over $900 000 of cycling lanes and on-road infrastructure built in Launceston within 12 months!!!

We need to get absolutely every available cyclist in Launceston to Civic Square for an Examiner photo shoot, to encourage the federal government to choose Launceston for funding.

The target is to have at least 100 bicyclists, but preferably 200, in the Civic Square 12:30 till 1pm on Friday 19th June.

As you might be aware from media reports, submissions close on June 30 for many competing infrastructure projects around Australia . Those that succeed will be because of numbers, perceived need - and enthusiasm.

Launceston City Council has applied for funding as part of the Federal Government’s $650 million Jobs Fund program to improve the Launceston Arterial Bike Route Network, which will provide more on-road bike routes, as well as development of a Northern suburbs commuter cycling trail linking the city suburbs of Rocherlea, Mayfield, Mowbray and Newnham to Inveresk and the central city.

Politicians need to see that cyclists will come out in numbers to support bikeways and cycling infrastructure.

If our application is successful, we will see:

* Over $900 000 of cycling lanes and on-road infrastructure built within 12 months.
* Over 50km of cycling friendly road treatments to encourage safe commuter cycling.
* Interconnected commuter cycling routes going to all points of the compass from the CBD.
* Phase one of the Nrth Suburbs Commuter Cycling Trail seeing a trail created from Inveresk to Remount Rd in preparation with an eventual connection behind Mowbray and through to the Rocherlea Old Rail Trail.

The rally will be a joint TBUG / LCC Bike Committee event.

The challenge: bring yourself and two friends/kids (or more) to really show that Launceston has the numbers and the passion! It will only take 1/2 hour of your time, but we need as many as we can!

Bring your bike, but if you haven’t got it at work come along anyway.

We need to know we’ll have the numbers, so please email our president Malcolm to let him know you (and how many friends) will be there: malcolm.cowan@bigpond.com

Forward this email on to your bike networks and friends (with apologies for cross-postings).

Let's make this a campaign to remember!! See you, and many more, there at 12:30 on Fri 19th.

Poll: Will you be attending the TBUG/LCC Bike Rally?

The Launceston City Council has put in submissions for a significant amount of funding for cycling infrastructure in Launceston.

Together with the LCC, we are holding a rally to show support and demonstrate that Launceston's cycling community has the numbers and enthusiasm it will take to justify the allocation of funds.

Our target is to have at least 100 cyclists (preferably 200) in Civic Square at 12:30pm on the 19th of June.

If you think you can make it, we'd love to hear from you. Please Malcolm Cowan at malcolm.cowan@bigpond.com!
