Why should you start cycling?

Why cycle for your health?
Cycling is an easy way to build regular physical activity into your day. It improves heart health, strengthens muscles and joints, and lowers the risk of chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes. Riding also supports mental wellbeing by reducing stress and boosting mood — all with a low-impact exercise that suits most ages and fitness levels.

Why cycle for your wallet and community?
Cycling costs far less than driving, helping you save on fuel, parking and car maintenance. When more people ride, there’s less traffic congestion, quieter streets, and safer roads for everyone. Active travel also reduces pressure on the health system by supporting healthier lifestyles.

Why cycle for the environment?
Transport is a major source of emissions in Australia, and many trips are short enough to ride instead. Choosing a bike produces zero direct emissions, improves local air quality, and helps reduce our overall carbon footprint — making cycling one of the simplest ways to take climate-positive action in everyday life.
Finding your way in Launceston
We know it can be daunting to start cycling, however Launceston has many trails and off-road paths to help you get started and TBUG also produced a map with the trails and routes marked on it. To help you get started.
We also recommend Google Maps Cycling layer or Open Street Maps as a way to find trails and safer routes to cycle. Or if you need a bit of support and encouragement consider joining one of our social rides or checkout our Facebook page for more details.
You can download the map from the City of Launceston’s website or pickup a copy at the Launceston Town Hall.
