What we do

Whether you ride to work, for fun or on special occasions with friends and family TBUG has events for you. We run a series of social rides throughout the year alongside our advocacy work.

TBUG has sat on the City of Launceston Transport Committee up until it was recently cancelled and we actively collaborate with council, state government and other NGO’s to advocate for better conditions for cyclists, safer streets, an expanded trail network and anything else we think can improve cycling in Launceston and the North of Tasmania.

Weekly rides

Every week, TBUG members run organised rides around the region. These include rural rides, often in the Midlands or Tamar Valley, travelling between towns such as from Westbury, Selbourne and Quamby, as well as rides in and around Launceston using the various shared-use trails.

The trails around Launceston vary each week and are suitable for all ages and abilities. They are a great way to get used to cycling if you’re new to it, in a safe and supported environment.

Special events

Throughout the year, TBUG runs a series of special bike rides. These include, for example:

International Women’s Day Ride

Ride to Work

Bike Week History Ride to Waverley Lake

Ride the Night

Tweed ride/Retro ride

Bike Week 2025

…as well as many other recreational rides.

If you have an idea for a special ride, or an event you’d like to take part in, please join us and let us know — we’d love to hear your ideas.

Though membership in TBUG isn’t required to take part in our rides and events, it does really help us out and we strongly recommend rider insurance from our partners at Bicycle Network. Learn more about membership here.

Safe streets and cycling advocacy

A core reason TBUG was formed is to advocate for safer streets and a more liveable city. While we run many fun and social activities, we are also actively working to improve our region through ongoing advocacy.

We participate in a range of workshops and community engagement events, and have previously sat on the City of Launceston’s Transport Committee (which was disbanded in 2025).

TBUG also makes submissions on major transport and infrastructure projects and engages with councils and local governments whenever opportunities arise to represent the interests of people who ride bikes.

If you’d like to help with our advocacy work, or have experience in this area, we would always welcome your support.

Speaking of advocacy, if you notice an issue that makes our area less safe, such as potholes, incorrectly parked cars, missing or confusing signage, or overgrown vegetation – please remember to report it to council via Snap Send Solve or directly to your local council.

These small actions really do help and make our towns and cities safer and more liveable for everyone. It’s available on both Android and iOS.
